On December 7, 2022, 11 members including Mr. Norbert S. Buthelezi, chairman of the Standing Committee on Appropriations of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa (National Assembly) visited the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) (Deputy Head Lee Shin-Woo) and met with key executives. The aim of the delegation's visit, which was held to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, was aimed to visit the National Assembly, the Board of Audit and Inspection, and the Samsung Innovation Museum to examine the bill and budget deliberation process in Korea and the history of development of private companies.
In this meeting, the South African delegation which was introduced to the institution and functions of NARS expressed interest in the legislative process of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and in particular inquired about how themes of major reports were selected, parliamentary activities were supported, and political neutrality was maintained. In addition, the two sides exchanged opinions on a range of topics: measures to strengthen education for national development; Korea's financial subsidy system for education; the recent high inflation situation and subsequent countermeasures; and the background and future prospects for each country's possible relocation of administration and legislature.
Kang Dae-hoon, head of the Social and Cultural Research Office of NARS, recommended that South Africa participate in the International Seminar for Parliamentary Research Services, which is held annually by NARS with more than 20 countries. Kim Jong-ok, head of the Economy and Industry Research Office, expressed his hope that exchanges and cooperation between the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and the Parliament of the Republic of Korea, which have continued steadily, can be further deepened and developed.
