On March 21, 2022, the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) of the Republic of Korea (Acting Chief Lee Shin-woo) published the 37th edition of NARS Info titled Reviews on the Target of Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio: Issues and Challenges. The report summarizes the main contents of Reviews on the Target of Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio: Issues and Challenges (Issues and Perspectives No. 2045) released on January 26, 2023. The paper examines the trends of setting and resetting the food self-sufficiency target, which indicates the percentage of food consumed that a country produces.
Most nations with a certain level of population and income focus on producing a moderate amount of food domestically. In that regard, food self-sufficiency is a representative indicator that shows how much effort a nation has put into its achievement. However, South Korea has changed its target quite often and has rarely reached its target. The NARS seeks to figure out the fundamental challenges of the country’s food self-sufficiency by providing infographics so that the target can be more carefully discussed and set.
The semimonthly publication ‘NARS Info’ makes it easier to understand the important reports and current issue papers that appear on its website and social network platforms.
