NARS Signs Joint MOU with Nine Research Associations and Institutes - Developing a research platform for North Korean and Inter-Korean studies
NARS Signs Joint MOU with Nine Research Associations and Institutes - Developing a research platform for North Korean and Inter-Korean studies
On April 25, 2024, National Assembly Research Service (Chief Park Sang-Chul) signed a joint MOU with the Judicial Policy Research Institute, the Korea Legislation Research Institute, the Korea Institute for National Unification, the Institute for National Security Strategy, the Korea Environment Institute, the Korean Political Science Association, the Korean Association of International Studies, the Korean Association of North Korean Studies, and the Korea Society of Unification and North Korean Law Studies to develop and run a joint research platform for North Korean and Inter-Korean studies.

There have been voices calling for interdisciplinary research on North Korean and Inter-Korean studies because so far the focus of such studies has been centered around issues regarding security and unification. As well, transformation of such focus has not systematically taken place due to changes in political power. So on March 14, 2024, NARS hosted a discussion titled Establishing an Interdisciplinary Research Platform for North Korean and Inter-Korean Studies where participants—including the nine institutes above—shared various ideas about the necessity of establishing such platform.

The agreement holds significance in that it provides ground for North Korean and Inter-Korean studies think tanks in legislative, judicial, and administrative areas to cooperate and collaborate. The participants aim to run joint research and host joint seminars, to exchange information such as publications and policy materials, and to collaborate in policymaking and legislative support based on the agreement.

Setting the joint research platform is expected to contribute to forming growing and sustainable Inter-Korean relations by vitalizing interdisciplinary research.
