On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the National Assembly Research Service (Chief Park Sang-chul) held a discussion session to celebrate the publication of the 2024 Annual Parliamentary Inspection Issue Analysis at the conference room of the National Assembly Research Service. The event was the second of its kind for this annual publication—the first being held in 2023. The event announced the publication—of which more than 100 legislative researchers contributed to its making over a three-month period—and introduced the publication’s major issues in the hope that the materials will be useful in policymaking. Experts from various fields also shared their opinions at the event.
During the opening ceremony, Park Sang-chul (Chief of NARS) read the publication’s preface, and National Assembly Speaker Woo Wun-shik followed with some short remarks, praising the authors for their efforts. Lawmakers from the major and minor parties delivered congratulatory speeches as well.
At the event, Jung Sun-im, Director General of the Politics and Administration Research Office, elaborated on the history of the publication and introduced some of its major issues, such as how to enhance measures to prevent online sex crimes, and the problems and tasks of the development of the Defense Innovation Cluster. Director General of the Economy and Industry Research Office Gang Jong-seok then made a presentation, covering issues such as the financial investment income tax and the problem of raising the deposit protection limit, inter alia. Following this, Director General Lee Man-woo from the Society and Culture Research Office spoke about the reliability of AI governance by the government, and how to raise the public healthcare labor pool in the regions, among other issues.
After the presentations, Dr. Choi Yoon-cheol (Professor, Konkuk University), Jung In-hong (General Manager, Financial News), Heo Ju (Head of the Research Division of the Korean Educational Development Institute), and Son Ho-jin (Director General of the Planning and Coordination Office) joined the discussion session.
The 2024 Annual Parliamentary Inspection Issue Analysis and the outcomes of the discussion will serve as useful reference for the nation’s upcoming annual parliamentary inspection.
