The Youngest Leader of the National Assembly Research Service - Kwan Hu Lee appointed as the new Chief of the NARS by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik -
On November 20, 2024, the National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik appointed Kwan Hu Lee, a professor at Sang-huh College of Konkuk University, as the 10th Chief of the National Assembly Research Service (NARS). Chief Lee—48 years old—is the youngest person ever appointed as the Chief of the NARS. “It is important to bring out the organizational capability to keep pace with the rapidly changing environment,” said the National Assembly Speaker Woo, as he presented Dr. Lee with a letter of appointment.
On November 19—the day before his appointment—right after the House Steering Committee reached an agreement on the appointment, the newly designated Chief said in his remarks, “I will continue the efforts of the National Assembly Research Service, which has been actively supporting the legislative activities of members of the National Assembly guided by the principles of nonpartisanship and expertise.” He pledged to, together with its staff, “spare no effort to keep the NARS functioning as a capable agency that can proactively respond to the rapidly changing internal and external legislative and policy environment.”
At his inauguration ceremony on Thursday, November 21, he said that, “as the most recent new hire,” he will undertake his duties with “a newcomer’s mindset,” and turn the NARS into a “dynamic organization through innovation and changes upon its already solid foundation.” He added that, “I will endeavor to turn the agency into a place where all employees can feel at home and remain competent so that the agency itself can actively respond to national challenges.”
Dr. Lee received his BA and MA in Political Science from Sogang University, and earned his PhD in Political Science from the University of London. He has been a professor at Sang-huh College of Konkuk University since 2023. He also served as a researcher at Sogang University Research Center and Gyeongnam Institute. In addition to his professorship and career as a researcher, he has held administrative positions as the Chief Policy Advisor to the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and Secretary to the President for Speech and Communication at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
